How to Fix Camera or Audio Issues in Microsoft Teams

Most Teams camera and microphone problems come from a device-level block, not a Teams setting. Check the physical privacy switch first, then Windows privacy settings, then Teams device settings, and update the camera driver if the problem persists.

If your camera or microphone isn't working in Microsoft Teams, work through these checks in order: physical block, Windows permissions, Teams device settings, then the camera driver. Most issues are resolved in the first two steps.

1. Check for a physical block

  • Check whether your camera has a physical cover or shutter closed over the lens.

  • Check for a privacy toggle or function key on your laptop that disables the camera or microphone.

2. Check Windows privacy settings

  • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy and security > Camera.

  • Confirm access is allowed for apps in general, and specifically for Microsoft Teams.

  • Repeat the check under Privacy and security > Microphone.

3. Check Teams device settings

  • Open Teams and go to Settings > Devices.

  • Confirm the correct camera is selected under Camera.

  • Confirm the correct microphone and speaker are selected under Audio devices.

4. Update the camera driver

  • Open Device Manager and expand Cameras.

  • Right-click the camera and select Update driver.

  • If that doesn't fix it, right-click the camera again, select Uninstall device, then restart. Windows reinstalls the driver automatically on startup.
